The Residential Real Estate Brokerage program at John Abbott College underwent a program revision in 2025 to incorporate legislative changes to the Real Estate Brokerage Act and to align with current industry standards. John Abbott College is part of a consortium of schools offering the Residential Real Estate Brokerage program, which is approved by the regulatory body overseeing the real estate industry in Quebec, the OACIQ (“Organisme d’autoréglementation du Courtage Immobilier du Québec”). The OACIQ has established ten core competencies that a new residential real estate broker must develop and master in order to practice ethically and responsibly within the field.

      1. Manage your professional activities in the field of real estate
      2. Comply with the general rules of ordinary law in residential real estate brokerage
      3. Comply with statutory laws in your residential real estate brokerage practice
      4. Comply with the Act and regulations governing real estate brokerage
      5. Help clients analyze the quality of a property
      6. Estimate the market value of a residential property
      7. Analyze the mortgage borrowing capacity and the purchasing capacity of clients
      8. Carry out brokerage transactions pertaining to the listing for sale or lease of, or search for, a residential property (less than 5 dwellings)
      9. Carry out brokerage transactions pertaining to the sale, purchase or lease of a residential property (less than 5 dwellings)
      10. Demonstrate the integration of acquired competencies in residential real estate brokerage

    OACIQ APPROVED

Upon successful completion of this AEC “attestation d’études collégiales” program the student will be required to demonstrate that they have the ten 10 competencies required by the OACIQ (“Organisme d’autoréglementation du Courtage Immobilier du Québec”) in order to obtain a license to practice.  The examination has been designed based on this competency framework.

The OACIQ exam may be written in English or French.  Those who choose to write the exam in English will be required to prove, before they are issued their license, French language competency as per the regulations.  You may consult the brochure of the “L’Office québécois de la langue française: Le français, un tremplin pour exercer une profession au Québec.”
